Column; Crab or Crap?

Doing business in China is a bit like eating crab for the first time.

The opportunities seem to be endless. Everybody has to go to China. Newspapers can’t wait to inspire you to go to this country, but many journalists write columns about this exiting country without even having been there.
First succes is not a guarantee
Out of every hundred entrepreneurs going to China there will definitely be some who will be successful the first time they go there. These will be the stories you will hear or read. But a first time success isn’t a guarantee for 100% success on the long haul. One has to realize that the risk of failure is always there, not only during the start.

The other 95% will try to make a start, maybe on a fair or organized business trip. Usually this will result in a briefcase full of leaflets of companies which offer the most promising products, prices and ditto future. But then the real work starts. How to read and understand all information you have gathered? And more importantly, how to value it?

This is where the crab eating comes in.
During every trip we make in China, a couple of times during lunch or dinner crab is on the menu. It looks delicious and you know it tastes great as well. If you are lucky it is already cut into pieces, but quite often you have to ‘disentangle’ it yourself. From our Dutch background we know how to eat Herring or Salmon but crab is something different. Where to start? What part is eatable and which is not? What is the best way to get the meat out, with chopsticks or any other way? If you are lucky your Chinese partner besides you will help. And even with that assistance it is a hell of a job, whilst meanwhile you see all other Chinese table partners eating the same thing just like it’s a piece of bread.

In your business set-up you will meet the same problems. Where to start in China? Which way of approach? What is good and what is not, what is real and what is not. Is it really crab or is it crap? And where your Chinese business partner might be very helpful by assisting you in eating crab, in business this is less likely. The attitude of Chinese businessmen is quite different from that of the European ones in this perspective. And although your partner probably realizes this, you will have to find out all by yourself.

Working together with a company who is specialized in these fields will save you a lot of the frustration and helps you concentrating on your own core business. Our company has the experience of some 25 years of doing business in China. We have the knowledge of how to set up production, quality control and logistics. In fact we already do all this.

Let us help you finding the best parts of the crab, so you can concentrate on enjoying the delicious taste!
